Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be gentle and comforting, evoking a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," remarked Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and supported its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you got behind this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about following this charming family navigate their everyday routines.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its long-running cynical streak. He attributed this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially catalyze that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
