From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a wide array of personalities, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, fiends, and malevolent powers expanding in influence within the urban setting.
Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 follow below.
The Soldiers Table Revealed
The third episode ended with a dramatic pause and presented the initial group of characters who will split off from the central cast to undertake their separate journey, distinct from the remaining groups.
This warrior group features the determined fighter (played by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (the talented performer), Tyranny (Whitney Moore), Wicander (the player), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).
Dividing the Cast
Considering a large ensemble, it was evident from the beginning that having everyone at one table would be impossible.
This explains, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Introduction, intertwining the personal journeys before splitting into three smaller tables: Warriors, Strategists, and Explorers.
What Defines the Warrior Group
According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the warrior group is for adventurers who prefer a typically action-packed battle-oriented narrative style where diplomatic options are scarce.
Upon first impression, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander might seem out of place, but the events of episode 3 show why these particular heroes are ideally matched for the combat party.
Motivations for Departure
First, the team knows exactly where to go next after a intense first encounter with the antagonists.
Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose death kicked off the narrative’s action—exploited the foes for his own means, entering the hidden lair, assaulting the character, and stealing all the magical artifacts to sell off.
Casimir then paid off his debts and fled to a fortified location in the northern region, beyond the urban center, with Cyd hot on his heels.
Character Drivers
Secondly, each member has a individual motive to leave the city the metropolitan area:
- The agile hero, as the close ally and best friend, wants retribution.
- The adventurer is familiar with Timmony and cautions that it is a hostile place.
- The strong character and The cleric, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to kill the fighter and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
- But, their status as prominent individuals in the powerful family could help the team enter places they normally couldn’t.
- Furthermore, The fighter pledged a life debt to The savior for his rescue and will now go with him everywhere.
Pursued by Authorities
In addition, all of them are wanted by the authorities that control the setting for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally dangerous:
- The rogue and Kattigan are known criminals.
- The warrior and The healer turned against the powerful family and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
- The target is wanted dead by the family.
This results in them few options but to head to the remote area in search of Casimir.
What’s Next?
