Giants QB Wilson Responds at Ex-Mentor Sean Payton Over Quarterback Comments
New York Giants signal-caller Russell Wilson didn't mince words on online platforms this Tuesday, reacting to recent comments from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Classless... but not shocked...," Wilson declared on X. "Had no idea you're still offering rewards 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's response directly referenced the notorious Bounty Gate issue from 2009 to 2011, when Payton led the Saints.
During that period, the NFL determined that the Saints had incentivized team members for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. Consequently, Payton was suspended from the NFL for one season.
What Sparked the Recent Exchange
Wilson's response came after Payton made comments following Denver's remarkable 33-32 win over the Giants. The coach suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with Jaxson Dart, who has replaced Wilson as the first-string QB.
Moreover, Payton hinted that he had informed team owner John Mara that he would prefer facing Wilson instead of Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara not too long ago and I said, 'We were hoping that the switch would've happened long after our game,'" Payton stated.
Context of the Coach-QB Partnership
- Wilson joined the Broncos from the Seahawks in 2022 and inked a 5-year, $245 million extension.
- The team finished 4 wins and 11 losses in his first season before Denver brought in Payton, who was coming back to coaching after a period in TV commentary.
- The coach replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a decision that ensured the quarterback from getting injured.
If Wilson remained on the team by spring 2024, his $37M salary for the following year would have been locked in. In the end, Wilson was let go, ending the contentious split between the player and his coach.
