Larry Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is departing from the governing body at the artificial intelligence firm, just a week after a collection of emails between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became public.
Summers stated in a release that he was "appreciative for the chance to have contributed, enthusiastic about the potential of the company, and anticipate following their development".
Summers, who formerly led the prestigious university, declared on recently that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his association with Epstein.
Message Exchange
The recently released messages demonstrated that Summers exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of his 2019 apprehension for accused human trafficking of underage individuals.
In additional comments, the artificial intelligence company said it accepted his choice to depart.
"We appreciate his significant contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the governing body," OpenAI stated.
Political Context
This announcement follows after both chambers of the US legislature decided on this week to pass a bill that would mandate the US justice department to make public its files on Epstein.
The legislation will then head to the administration of President Trump for signature. The President has said he expects to sign the measure, after changing his view on the subject following pressure from his base.
Message Details
A group of Epstein-connected messages made public by the Congressional committee days ago included several high-profile figures in the billionaire's previous network, without suggesting any criminal activity by those people.
The messages indicated that the economist and the financier often met for meals, with he often attempting to connect the academic to notable international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the messages were made available with the general audience, Summers stated he took "full responsibility for my misguided judgment to continue communicating with the financier".
He further stated that he wanted "to rebuild confidence and fix relationships with the people most important to me".
Professional History
The economist occupied high-level positions under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under the former president, and as leader of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He led Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his withdrawal from public commitments recently on Monday, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Other Impacts
Following Summers' statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal policy institute in the capital where the professor was a senior fellow, confirmed that the economist was ceased to be associated with the group.
He entered the leadership of the AI company, which makes the AI chatbot, in last year - following a failed attempt to replace its chief executive OpenAI's head.
