Adrian Dunbar are set to reprise their characters in the popular police drama

The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th installment, confirmed by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part season written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The last season concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only arrived recently.

New Challenges for AC-12

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most delicate case to date."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of criminal networks, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a offender.

However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the background, plot details hinted.

In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had so many fans track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those mercurial twists and turns."

Series Legacy

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and producers said at the time there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now in development.
