A minimum of 64 people were killed in a police operation targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's history.

Fierce clashes erupted when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho countered with shooting, setting fire to barriers and using drone-dropped explosives, officials confirmed.

The United Nations human rights body said it was "appalled" by the law enforcement raid, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Operation Impact

The area of favelas near Rio's airport is seen as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.

Government representatives stated no less than 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Dozens of people were injured, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Resident Accounts

Locals have compared the hillside area - home to about 300,000 residents - to a "war zone" since the mission commenced.

Access ways continue shut in the entire neighborhood.

Criminal Expansion

The criminal network has been growing their influence in the area, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.

Local law enforcement stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the operation, together with dozens of firearms.

Mission Context

The joint operation by various security forces was preceded by a year-long investigation.

Dozens of the suspects are thought to be affiliates of a group from the Pará state who are at the moment taking refuge in the city.

Larger Framework

Major law enforcement actions are not uncommon in Brazil ahead of important worldwide conferences in the nation.

The United Nations climate conference the environmental summit is taking place in the northern city of Belem in late autumn.
