Operations Recommence at Edinburgh Airport Following Significant Air Traffic Control Outage

An IT issue at the airport's ATC meant all flights could arrive or depart from the facility.

Flight operations have recommenced at Edinburgh Airport after a major technical issue at the control tower brought the international hub to a standstill.

All incoming and outgoing flights were halted due to an technical fault that occurred at about 08:30.

Several flyers found themselves stranded in planes on the runway as the outage continued.

Operations Restart with Continued Disruption

Officials announced at 10:40 that operations had restarted, and expressed gratitude to passengers for their "patience and understanding".

Nonetheless, considerable delays are expected to affect schedules. Services bound for London Gatwick, Bristol, Amsterdam and Frankfurt have been called off, with many others facing hold-ups.

An airport representative had previously estimated that a significant number of movements could be affected.

"Flyers are asked to contact their airlines for the latest information on their booked journeys," was the consistent advice.

Source of the Issue

The airport attributed the operational halt to an systems failure with its ATC service provider.

Passengers continue to be advised to verify the schedule of their flight before heading to the airport as backlogs are managed.
