Stupidity and Regal Arrogance Sunk Andrew, and It May Not Be Over Yet

This episode commenced with a single photograph, possibly the most significant ever snapped of a member of the monarchy.

Present was the Earl of Inverness, standing closely beside a female youth, while another individual beamed conspiratorially in the backdrop.

Lacking that image, shot at a party in 2001, it would have been difficult to accept the claims of a adolescent who declared she was moved across the ocean and obliged to have cursory relations with a prince of the monarchy?

An odd, indicative gesture by someone who had openly stated to have not heard of her, asserted he could never have had sex with her, and yet provided a large amount of family resources to settle a long-delayed court action.

Years of Disgrace

Considering this, conversations of the monarchy acting swiftly to sever ties with Andrew are inaccurate. This controversy has endured for the largest portion of 15 years since that image, and an additional snapshot of Andrew walking amiably with a convicted sex offender came to light.

  • Hubris: How long did his brothers and sisters, maybe even his relatives, realize that Andrew was so presumptuous?
  • Problematic Connections: They must have known, if his aides and the authorities were doing their jobs, that he had some extremely unsavory companions given he openly welcomed them to estates.
  • Monetary Excess: If the monarchy did not know about his personal conduct, they certainly knew about his wastefulness with taxpayer funds.

Trips were printed in royal annual reports: helicopter transfers from the royal residence to a sporting venue and back again in time for lunch, chartered planes instead of regular transport, all for the benefit of "Airmiles Andy".

Existence of Entitlement

Additionally the entitlement which expected deference when he appeared in a area or the supreme awareness about his honorifics used on his correspondence in letters to his associates.

He could get away with it while his matriarch, who unaccountably pampered him, was still alive. The monarch did at least strip him of royal responsibilities and military positions in the consequence of his disastrous and, as revealed, deceptive media appearance six years ago.

Latest Events

It was only in the last fortnight that events sped up, following the issuance of books giving more disturbing information of his conduct and that of his associates.

Further disclosures have again highlighted Andrew's belief that he could avoid being untruthful about his relationship with a disgraced individual.

People (and the journalists) were far ahead of the royal family. There was not a single person of any importance to speak up for him, a result of all those years of arrogance.

Royal Worries

The more intelligent royals understood that. The key objective is to transfer the monarchy, if not as before at least intact and unblemished.

Over time the last 190 years trying to overcome the image of earlier rulers, showing they are beneficial, accountable and responsive to their citizens.

His actions endangered all that in jeopardy in an era when deference and secrecy is no longer adequate.

Aftermath

Eventually, the notoriously hesitant sovereign was pressured additional. There was no alternative. The palace had lost control of the story.

Now it is the removal of honorifics and the continued and permanent social disgrace that will hurt Andrew the most.

  • Reduction: Lowered to just a private citizen
  • Prior Instance: The initial member to lose his titles in contemporary era
  • Naval Career: Notably hurtful given his service in the conflict

He is still a counsellor of state, theoretically able to stand in for the monarch, and he is still in the lineage to the crown, but none of these will truly happen.

Future Prospects

Do individuals he encounters still defer to him? Might they still make mistakes and call him Sir? Would they say Sir,

Certainly, he is not retiring to a common area, but to the monarchy's extensive property at a monarchical property.

At that location, he will be furnished by the sovereign with one of the royal residences and given some type of private allowance.

This is not his prior accommodation, where he paid a minimal rent for more than 20 years, and the county is a bit remote, but even so it may not be far enough.

Unresolved Issues

Matters remain unresolved. There are still files in the possession of overseas authorities to be disclosed.

  • Governmental Scrutiny: Could legislators request additional information
  • Financial Investigation: Or examine the misuse of state resources
  • Legal Possibility: There may even be a police investigation into his actions

Maybe for the time being the institutional damage to the institution is contained. The message from the palace was plainly that the revocation of honorifics was what the king, and especially other senior family members, sought.

A Shift in Position

The cessation of illusion that Andrew was acting willingly. And, remarkably, the brief announcement showed clearly that the institution were aligning with the accuser's version of events.

Additionally, for the initial instance they finally showed concern for the affected individuals: "The censures are considered essential, notwithstanding the truth that he maintains his innocence of the claims against him."

Finally it is entitlement, selfishness and inactivity that will destroy the monarchy. In his foolishness, self-gratification and corruption, Andrew gives the impression never to have learned that lesson.
