The Boss Maresca Labels Lead-Up Time as The 'Most Difficult 48 Hours' with the Club
Chelsea tactician Enzo Maresca stated that the build-up to Saturday's win against Everton was "the most challenging 48 hours" of his tenure with the London club.
The Italian offered a somewhat cryptic message in his after-game interview despite notching a 2-0 win at home thanks to goals from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.
Those points lifted Chelsea once again into the Premier League's top four, potentially lightening the mood after a defeat to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the team's winless run to four matches.
But, when questioned about the full-back's assist and overall display, Maresca surprisingly disclosed his annoyance over the preceding two days at the organization.
"How the lads want to learn has been excellent and this is the reason why I praise them - because with so many problems, they are excelling after a difficult week," he stated.
"From the moment I arrived at the club, the last 48 hours have been the toughest because many people didn't support us."
When pushed further on what he meant, the former Leicester City boss added: "Most difficult 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."
When questioned if he meant people internally at Chelsea, he answered: "Broadly speaking. In general," before clarifying when asked if it was aimed at fans or the press: "I love the fans and we are very pleased with the fans."
Fitness and Suspension Woes
Maresca also drew attention to Chelsea's ongoing injury and suspension issues, remarking they had been missing star attacker Cole Palmer for much of the season, in addition to losing linchpin Moises Caicedo to a three-match ban and forward Liam Delap to a couple of significant injuries.
"I truly praise the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, 11 of them without Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them without Liam Delap," he said.
"And this squad, regardless of who is playing, they are performing fantastic. Today was 5 games in 12 days so certainly when you see Cole Palmer available, we have said many times that he's our finest player but we play the vast majority of the season without our best player.
"We play 5 games in the Premier League minus Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would want people externally to acknowledge because the effort from the players is fantastic."
Chelsea's triumph over Everton strengthened their position in 4th place in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup last-eight tie at Cardiff and a league journey to Newcastle scheduled in the coming days.
Uncertainty Over Maresca's Comments
It was unclear what exactly prompted Maresca to label the past 48 hours as the most difficult of his tenure as Chelsea manager.
In that timeframe, the Italian had returned with his backroom team and players from Bergamo, held a session at the training ground, attended a pre-game news conference where he appeared at ease, and engineered a victory over an high-flying Everton team.
It was unclear whether any specific media reports had irked him, if online discourse played a role, or if it was something more significant from inside the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.
Maresca specifically took care to rule out that it was an matter involving the club's fans, some of whom have not yet fully warm to him since his arrival from Leicester in July 2024.
