The Devastating Transformation Just One Year Has Brought in America

In late October 2024, the environment was entirely separate. Prior to the national election, thoughtful Americans could acknowledge the country's significant faults – its unfairness and inequality – but they continued to see it as America. A democratic nation. A country where legal governance meant something. A country headed by a dignified and ethical leader, even with his older age and growing weakness.

Currently, this autumn, countless Americans hardly identify the nation we live in. Persons alleged as unauthorized foreigners are collected and shoved into vehicles, at times refused legal rights. The left side of the presidential residence – is being torn down for a grotesque dance hall. Donald Trump is targeting his opponents or supposed enemies and requesting legal authorities transfer an enormous amount of public funds. Uniformed troops are being sent across metropolitan centers on false pretexts. The Pentagon, rebranded the Department of War, has practically liberated itself of regular press examination as it spends possibly reaching nearly $1tn from citizen taxes. Universities, law firms, news companies are buckling due to presidential intimidation, and rich magnates are treated like nobility.

“The United States, shortly prior to its quarter-millennium anniversary as the globe's top democratic nation, has crossed the brink toward dictatorship and fascism,” an American historian, stated recently. “Finally, swifter than I imagined possible, it transpired here.”

One awakes amid recent atrocities. And it's difficult to grasp – and agonizing to acknowledge – how deeply lost we are, and how quickly it unfolded.

Nevertheless, we understand that the president was duly elected. Even after his profoundly alarming first term and following the warnings that came with the awareness of the conservative plan – following the leader directly stated openly he intended to rule as a tyrant solely at the start – sufficient voters elected him instead of his Democratic opponent.

As terrifying as the present situation may be, it's more daunting to realize that we have only been nine months into this administration. What will three more years of this downfall leave us? And suppose that timeframe turns into an prolonged era, since there is nobody to limit this ruler from opting that another term is required, possibly for defense purposes?

Admittedly, all is not lost. There are legislative votes next year that could establish an alternate political equilibrium, if Democrats recapture either chamber of Congress. There exist government representatives who are attempting to impose a degree of oversight, such as lawmakers that are initiating an inquiry regarding the effort to money grab by federal prosecutors.

And a national vote in 2028 could begin the path to recovery just as last year’s election placed us on this disappointing trajectory.

We see countless citizens protesting in urban areas of their cities, like they performed recently during anti-authority protests.

A former official, commented this week that “the slumbering force of the nation is awakening”, similar to past after the Communist witch-hunt era in that decade or amid the sixties activism or throughout the Nixon controversy.

In those instances, the tilting vessel eventually was righted.

Reich says he recognizes the signs of that revival and notices it unfolding currently. As evidence, he references the recent massive protests, the extensive, multi-faction opposition against a personality's dismissal and the near-unanimous refusal by journalists to accept the defense department’s demands they report only what is sanctioned.

“The slumbering entity always remains dormant till specific greed grows too toxic, a particular deed so contemptuous of the common good, some brutality so loud, that the giant is forced except to rise.”

It's a hopeful perspective, and I appreciate Reich’s experienced view. Perhaps he will prove to be right.

At the same time, the crucial issues remain: is the US able to ever recover? Can it retrieve its position globally and its commitment to legal principles?

Or must we acknowledge that the 250-year-old experiment worked for a while, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My negative thoughts indicates that the final scenario is accurate; that everything might be lost. My optimistic spirit, nevertheless, tells me that we have to attempt, through all methods available.

Personally, as an observer of the press, that’s about urging journalists to commit, more thoroughly, to their purpose of scrutinizing authority. For some people, it might involve engaging with election efforts, or coordinating protests, or finding ways to defend ballot privileges.

Less than a year ago, we existed in a very different place. Twelve months later? Or in several years? The reality is, we cannot predict. All we can do is to strive to not give up.
