The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Lighthearted Spectacle – Yet It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Sanitize Conflict.
An freshly coined acronym surfaced a couple of months after the start of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Known as WCNSF, it means “Child casualty without any family left”. This acronym is found only in Gaza, according to doctors such as child health specialists. Ordinarily, it is rare for physicians to treat a minor who has lost their complete family. However, there has been no semblance of normality regarding the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been wiped out and the number of child amputees exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary in scores of doctors arriving back from a devastated terrain with accounts of children being deliberately targeted.
A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Announced Cessation of Hostilities
Conditions in Gaza persist as an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that genocidal acts are ongoing. The Israeli government has denied these allegations, consistent with how it refutes everything it is accused of. But while young survivors are now suffering from the cold in temporary shelters, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” The contest will continue to extend a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that several European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, apparently, is what unity looks like.
Eurovision, of course prohibited Russia from competing in 2022 because of the “grave situation in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza seems entirely distinct.
A Selective Vision
Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was reportedly killed in Gaza just days ago. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Forget the fact that global media are still denied freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.
The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Profound Human Cost
The contest turns 70 next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. An institution that initially championed togetherness has devolved into a transparent instrument to whitewash war.
