Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Aggression So Long As The Three Lions' Ace Sets Aside His Ego Outside.
A single omission did the trick. Another and it would have started to look spiteful from the England manager, who is much too clever not to know that securing World Cup glory will likely need the involvement of Jude Bellingham, even if it is also up to the player to adapt to the game plans and squad hierarchies necessary with the national team now that he is returned to the manager's supportive environment.
The manager desires the player's competitive fire, his passion, but it is about channeling it constructively. Skill is important but the squad know from bitter experience that there is consequences when stardom takes over. Still, a statement has been delivered.
The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after being left out of the previous squad. He watched England qualify at the tournament in his absence. He watched Morgan Rogers excel as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He listened as Tuchel talk about appreciating the group’s energy and values. Inevitably, he has reacted in champion style, scoring crucial goals for his club against Barcelona and the Italian side. He had to be picked; leaving him out again would have made his squad place hanging by a thread.
The hope is that Tuchel will have a Bellingham directed towards frightening rivals rather than his own colleagues. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to picking a fight with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has made him realize that playing for one's country is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now offer support for the 22-year-old after demonstrating that he is willing to drop big names.
“No issue exists regarding him, and no concern with the character,” the German said. “Jude displays that aggression. It takes a sharp mentality to achieve greatness that he has. Everyone need to support him and create an environment which he can [have] that intensity against rivals and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham dominated much of the focus at the manager's selection reveal for the upcoming meaningless matches versus one opponent and Albania. Who else? Well, how about another talent? This is a further gifted No 10 requiring coaching. He has been absent for the national team since spring and has struggled to perform well recently but the boss was impressed by the 25-year-old after his display in the Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund this week.
The question, though, is how to use the attacking talents at available. Morgan Rogers and Eze deserve their spots and there will be a good argument to include another youngster once he recovers from a ongoing injury. Would taking five No 10s to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate never found the right blend at the European Championship. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, restricting the captain's influence in the process.
It is hard to see the current manager repeating that if it harms the offensive structure. Space exists for one No 10, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clear roles helps. Bellingham is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the returning Adam Wharton will vie with Elliot Anderson as a No 6. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be central. The coach prefers him close to Kane. “It does not make sense to tell Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but there’s no space on your best position, could you fill in at left wing? Or the other flank?’” he stated. “He will play in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I've long had this vision regarding him for years. In my view it fits his style the most.”
Tuchel conceded there are times when Foden has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “You feel as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy to play football, then clearly an issue exists, be it the position, the setup, it's unclear.
“I think he is also accustomed to playing for Man City in a specific system, to have a clear task. I think he benefits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?
Tuchel discussed one star making runs for tap-ins and Foden scoring goals from outside the box. He said he has a extended list of 60 players. Several players, others, James Trafford and the midfielder have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his excellent performances for Manchester City at defense. Interest abounds.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in the selection. Fascinatingly, he hinted at deploying Foden as a deep-lying striker versus Serbia or Albania. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are alternatives if Kane be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for a little experimentation.
Meanwhile, it is also a moment to foster the understanding with his teammate flowing. It is remarkable that you have to go back to Bellingham assisting Kane to score in an international match against Scotland in September 2023 to discover the one and only time in 35 games for the national team when the pair linked up for a goal. The coach will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball a single time during England’s draws with one opponent and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.
“This is where eventually it becomes the duty of the players,” Tuchel said. He is not afraid to speak frankly. Remains a feeling of Bellingham under scrutiny. He may not be assured to begin versus Serbia and Albania. The manager desires him committed but he will be monitoring him closely. Leave the ego outside. It will make a powerful squad into an superior one.
