Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
